What separates the Principe from the conventional penny loafer is its hand-sewn Norwegian construction, a technique traditionally associated with robust outdoor footwear, in which the upper is stitched outward to the welt rather than inward, creating a visible row of hand-stitching that traces the entire perimeter of the shoe at the point where upper meets sole. On a penny loafer this reads as a deliberate elevation of the form, the craftsmanship worn on the outside where it can be seen, giving the shoe a solidity and a textural interest that a standard cemented or Goodyear-welted construction does not produce. An apron toe completes the front of the shoe in the classic penny loafer manner, the saddle strap crossing the vamp with its characteristic slot.
