The name comes from Duffel, a town in Belgium where the heavy, closely-woven woollen cloth used in the original coats was first produced. The garment itself was adopted by the British Royal Navy during the First World War, issued to officers as protection against the Atlantic and North Sea, the toggle fastenings engineered deliberately to be operated while wearing heavy gloves, the hood cut to sit over a peaked naval cap. During the Second World War the design was widely issued across the British armed forces, becoming associated particularly with Field Marshal Montgomery, whose preference for the coat gave it the informal name "Monty coat." After the war, vast surpluses of military duffle coats were sold to civilian distributors, and in 1951 Harold and Freda Morris of Gloverall acquired a significant portion of that surplus, eventually producing the first fully civilian duffle coat in 1954 with buffalo horn toggles and leather fastenings, establishing the template that most versions since have followed. Brunello Cucinelli takes that template and builds it from wool, angora and silk: the angora adding a plush softness and a faint halo to the surface, the silk introducing a subtle luminosity to the navy, the wool providing structure and weight, the three fibres together producing a cloth considerably more refined than any military surplus issue. Horn buttons engraved with "Brunello Cucinelli" close the coat alongside envelope-style patch pockets with curved flaps sitting above the slanted side pockets, and the dual vents at the back open and close with push buttons, a functional detail resolved with the same precision as everything else.

The duffle coat has spent seventy years moving from naval issue to civilian classic without losing the logic of its original design. Brunello Cucinelli's version in wool, angora and silk is the furthest that journey has taken it.
