Curator's Description

Discover the Corneliani Grey Wool & Castorino-Fur Lining Pied de Poule Overcoat. Castorino is the fine underfur of the nutria, a semi-aquatic animal whose pelt has been used in luxury outerwear for over a century. The name comes from the Italian for "little beaver," a reference to the similarity in texture and appearance between the two furs. Castorino is prized for its exceptional softness, its warmth relative to its weight, and a smooth, dense hand that sits apart from other fur linings at this level. Here it lines the front panel and faces the notch lapels in dark brown, a detail that reveals itself when the coat is worn open or when the lapels fold back to show the contrast between the wool exterior and the fur interior.

The outer cloth is a wool pied de poule in grey and taupe, lightly brushed to soften the surface and give the pattern a slightly muted, tactile quality rather than the sharper definition of an unbrushed houndstooth. The brushing keeps the check present without making it the dominant feature of a coat that has more than enough interest in its construction and lining.

The closure is hidden behind a fly front, keeping the exterior clean and uninterrupted. Slanted side pockets sit flush against the front panel, horn buttons fasten the closure, and a single vent sits at the back. Inside, the coat is fully lined.

A wool pied de poule overcoat with castorino fur facing at the lapels and front panel from Corneliani is a specific and considered piece.
