Zegna werd in 1910 opgericht in Trivero, Italië, door een jonge ondernemer genaamd Ermenegildo - hij was de jongste van Angelo Zegna's 10 kinderen. Angelo, van beroep horlogemaker, was begonnen met het weven van wol met behulp van vier weefgetouwen. Vanuit deze bescheiden beginperiode begon de 18-jarige Ermenegildo de weefgetouwen te gebruiken om kwaliteitsstoffen te creëren die hij beschreef als "de mooiste ter wereld".
