Curator's DescriptionDiscover the Etro Milano Brown and White Checkered Bouclé Suit. The cloth operates on several levels at once. The base is a glen plaid in brown, the diagonal structure of the plaid running through the ground as the foundation pattern, and across this two overchecks are laid simultaneously: a white windowpane and a dark brown windowpane, the two running at the same or different intervals and intersecting with the glen plaid beneath them to produce a surface with a layered complexity that reveals itself gradually rather than presenting all at once. The bouclé construction introduces a further dimension, the looped yarn creating a slightly irregular, textured surface with neps distributed through the weave, the cloth carrying a plush, tactile quality that a smooth-faced suiting would flatten entirely, the neps catching light differently from the surrounding weave and giving the brown and white ground a visual liveliness specific to this construction. The result is a cloth that reads as a warm, textured brown at distance and resolves into a layered pattern of considerable depth on close inspection.
The lining is where Etro delivers its most emphatic statement. A neon green multicolour striped silk runs the full interior of the jacket, the colour a deliberate and complete contrast to the brown and white exterior, the house's conviction that what is inside a garment is as considered as what is outside made explicit in the most vivid terms the palette allows.
