Luigi Borrelli Navy Wool Breathable-Hopsack Jacket

Discover the Luigi Borrelli Navy Wool Breathable Hopsack Jacket. Hopsack is a plain weave construction built from thicker yarns in a basket-like structure, the open weave producing a cloth with visible gaps between the threads that gives the fabric its characteristic breathability and its slightly coarse, textured surface. Held to the light the cloth is translucent, the open construction allowing light to pass through in a way that a conventional suiting weave does not permit, the threads visible as a loose, regular grid against the brightness behind. On the body the same construction covers completely, the cloth's opacity when worn in no way suggesting the openness that becomes apparent when the jacket is lifted away, the two states of the fabric reading as almost contradictory and the hopsack's performance in warm conditions a direct result of that open structure. Navy in a wool hopsack carries the colour with a dry, slightly matte quality that the textured surface produces, the tone composed and clean without the formality that a smooth-faced navy suiting would impose.

The jacket is entirely unlined, the hopsack sitting directly against whatever is worn beneath it, the absence of lining consistent with both the cloth's breathable intention and the Neapolitan construction principles that Luigi Borrelli applies to its tailoring. The house, founded in Naples in 1957, brings the same standard of hand finishing to a hopsack jacket as to any other piece in its range, the construction light and unencumbered throughout. Notch lapels and a 2.5-button closure give the front a clean, open proportion suited to the warm-weather register the cloth occupies, patch pockets at the hips completing the jacket without complication.

Luigi Borrelli makes a hopsack jacket that disappears when worn and performs when it matters.
