It was established in the early eighteenth century as the regimental pattern of the 42nd Regiment of Foot, the Highland regiment formed in 1739 and known as the Black Watch, named for the dark colouring of the cloth and the role of the Highland companies in watching over the Scottish Highlands. Unlike most tartans, Black Watch is not associated with a specific clan, having originated as a government and military pattern, which is why it has always been considered universally wearable outside of regimental dress.

The sett is built from deep navy, racing green and black in a proportion that causes the navy to read almost as black from a distance, leaving the racing green as the dominant visible colour. In tweed wool the pattern carries weight and depth that lighter cloth constructions cannot replicate, and at jacket scale it reads as formal enough for tailored dressing and specific enough to make an immediate statement.
