The RL numbered jackets reach back into Lauren's personal wardrobe archive, each one drawing from a specific chapter of the house's history: 1969 sits at the beginning of everything, the year the Polo line expanded into full menswear and Lauren began assembling the visual language of American elegance that has remained consistent for over five decades. The RL69 takes that foundation and expresses it through British country sporting dress, the reference point being the classic field jacket worn by English landowners and gamekeepers for over a century. Shetland tweed is the right cloth for it: woven from the fleece of Shetland sheep on Scotland's northern islands, it has a dry, slightly rough hand quite unlike the smoother tweeds of Yorkshire or Ireland, its natural lanolin content giving it an inherent weather resistance and a texture that wears in rather than out. The herringbone weave adds directionality and depth to the brown ground, the pattern shifting as the light moves. Large patch pockets with flaps sit at the hip in the tradition of the shooting jacket, built to carry what a day in the field demands, while the throat tab allows the collar to be buttoned all the way closed against wind and cold, a detail borrowed directly from working country clothing and carried into a thoroughly refined context.
