Discover the Ermenegildo Zegna Navy Vintage 1980's Yachting Coat. The Zegna Yachting line was formalised in the 1970s under the full name Ermenegildo Zegna Yachting, conceived, in the words of the Zegna archive, "for people who love being in boats or around quaysides and in general for those who do outdoor sport but also like to bring a certain way of dressing to it." By the early 1980s the line had deepened its nautical involvement through the Portofino sailing regatta, and the garments from this period carry that intent directly: technically considered, water-resistant where possible, and built with enough tailored discipline to work away from the water as well as on it. This coat is from that era and carries the original Ermenegildo Zegna Yachting label, which is the identifier collectors look for.
The silhouette is pure 1980s Italian: heavy shoulder padding that builds a strong, squared line across the top of the coat and a structured chest that reflects the decade's preference for authority in outerwear. Navy is the correct colour for the line and this example wears its age naturally, with a patina that confirms its provenance without compromising its character.
The lower front panel introduces three duffle-style toggle closures, a deliberate nod to maritime outerwear tradition that grounds the coat in its nautical brief. It is an unusual construction detail that distinguishes it from a standard overcoat of the period and makes it immediately legible as a piece with a specific design intention. Inside, the lining is bright green, a contrast that was entirely intentional at the time and reads now as a period-correct detail that adds to the collector interest rather than detracting from it.
Pieces from the original Ermenegildo Zegna Yachting line with intact labelling and natural patina in this condition are genuinely rare.
