Norvegese, or Norwegian welt, is the most weatherproof of all traditional welted shoe constructions: where a conventional Goodyear welt folds the upper inward and stitches it from beneath, the Norwegian welt folds the upper outward so that the stitching runs along the exterior of the shoe, the seam between the upper and the welt exposed rather than tucked away, a counterintuitive approach that produces an exceptionally tight mechanical seal against water and debris. Developed in Norway for working boots required to perform in extreme conditions, the construction was later adopted by fine shoemakers for its structural integrity and its distinctive visual character, the raised exterior welt giving the boot a rugged, purposeful profile that no other construction produces. The upper is warm taupe suede, the nap softening the tone and giving it a matte depth that sits comfortably across a wide range of contexts. The interior is lined with Castorino, the Italian term for nutria fur, derived from the South American coypu, a semi-aquatic rodent whose pelt is sheared and treated to bring forward the dense, insulating undercoat, the lining providing exceptional warmth and softness against the foot. Beneath, a Vibram commando sole provides serious grip and durability across wet and uneven ground.
