The Couture line was Ermenegildo Zegna's highest tier of ready-to-wear, the designation reserved for pieces produced from the house's finest cloths and built with a level of internal construction and hand finish that placed them in a separate category from the mainline production. Wool, silk and cashmere in combination at this tier means fibres selected at the top of what each category offers, the wool providing structure and resilience, the silk introducing a surface luminosity and a softness of drape, and the cashmere contributing a touch so fine and warm that the cloth registers against the hand as something in a different class from conventional suiting fabric. The micro-check runs through the grey ground at a scale so close to the base colour that it reads as surface texture rather than pattern from any normal distance, the construction present as depth and complexity in the cloth rather than as a visible design, the kind of detail that a man who understands textile will find immediately and that most wearers will spend the suit's entire life unaware of.
