Its defining characteristics have remained consistent across more than a century: a clean, long silhouette, a velvet collar at the back neck, and a cloth weight suited to cold-weather outdoor wear. The velvet collar is the detail that identifies the format most immediately, sitting at the back of the neck where it serves both a practical and an aesthetic function, protecting the coat cloth at the point of most friction while providing a material contrast that anchors the coat's identity.

This example is a vintage Zegna piece estimated from the 1970s or 1980s, a period when the house was producing some of its most considered outerwear. The cloth is a wool and cashmere herringbone in charcoal, which departs from the traditional British covert cloth palette of tan and fawn in favour of an urban, Italian reading of the same silhouette. The herringbone weave adds surface texture and depth to the charcoal ground, and the cashmere content softens the handle and adds warmth without increasing the weight of the cloth.

The coat is long, closes with three buttons on notch lapels, and carries flap pockets at the hips. Inside, it is fully lined. A large single vent sits at the back, consistent with the coat's country and riding origins. Zegna was founded in 1910 in Trivero, Italy by a young entrepreneur called Ermenegildo - he was the youngest of Angelo Zegna’s 10 children. Angelo, a watchmaker by trade, had started weaving wool using four looms. From these humble beginnings, an 18-year-old Ermenegildo began using the looms creating quality fabrics that he described as “the most beautiful in the world”.
