Ralph Lauren Blue Cotton & Linen Prince of Wales Jacket

Discover the Ralph Lauren Blue Cotton & Linen Prince of Wales Jacket. Prince of Wales is one of the most established check constructions in tailoring cloth, built from a Glen plaid base overlaid with an overcheck that creates the characteristic large-scale pattern. In cotton and linen the construction takes on a different character from its traditional wool expression: lighter, more relaxed in handle, and naturally suited to warm-weather dressing in a way that the woollen original is not.

The cotton and linen blend distributes the properties of each fibre across the cloth: cotton providing the structure and weave consistency, linen adding breathability and a slight natural irregularity to the surface that gives the fabric its character. At this weight and in blue, the Prince of Wales pattern reads as a warm-weather sport jacket rather than a formal suiting cloth, which is the correct register for the construction.

The jacket is half lined, which keeps it light and allows the cloth to breathe. It closes at 2.5 buttons on notch lapels, with patch pockets at the hips. Patch pockets reinforce the relaxed, summer-weight register of the piece and are the correct pocket format for a jacket of this cloth and construction.

Blue Prince of Wales in cotton and linen works with white or cream trousers in summer and sits equally well over tailored chinos or casual dressing. Ralph Lauren has built a consistent language around exactly this kind of American-inflected sporting tailoring, and the piece sits naturally within that tradition.
