Navy is Ralph Lauren's tuxedo colour in the way that black is everyone else's, the house having championed the dark blue dinner suit as an American alternative to the conventional black long enough that it has become as much a part of the brand's identity as the polo player on the chest. The cloth is a fine wool that handles the formality of the tuxedo format without stiffness, the weight appropriate for the occasion and the drape holding its line through a long evening without assistance. Silk lapels catch the light in contrast to the matte surface of the wool, the two materials working together in the manner that black tie dressing has always relied upon, and a silk grain stripe runs along the outseam of the trousers, the single decorative note that distinguishes a dinner suit trouser from a plain one. It is a combination that has not changed in its essentials since the tuxedo was codified in the late nineteenth century, and Ralph Lauren understands better than most that some things require no improvement.
