Ralph Lauren White & Navy Pima-Cotton Cricket Sweater
52 IT / 42 US / Large
Discover the Ralph Lauren White & Navy Pima-Cotton Cricket Sweater. The cricket sweater emerged in England in the late nineteenth century as a functional garment for a sport played across an entire day in variable weather. The deep V-neck was a deliberate practical choice: deep enough to be pulled on and off over a collared shirt quickly between overs, and open enough to prevent overheating during active play while retaining warmth at the chest when standing in the field. The cable knit construction provided the structure and insulation needed for cooler mornings and evenings without the weight of a heavier garment. The coloured trim at the V-neck, cuffs and hem in navy identified the player's club or county, a tradition that has persisted in the design long after it left the cricket pitch entirely.
White was the colour of the game, both in clothing and in Test match kit, and the sweater retained that base even as the navy trim became increasingly associated with the sweater's aesthetic rather than its function. By the mid-twentieth century the cricket sweater had moved well beyond the sport, particularly into American Ivy League and prep school dressing, where the V-neck cable knit in white and navy became a defining piece of that wardrobe.
Ralph Lauren has returned to this design consistently across his career, and it sits naturally within his broader reference to Anglo-American sporting tradition. Here it is knitted in Pima cotton rather than wool, the extra-long staple fibre producing a softer, more lustrous surface and making the sweater viable across a wider range of temperatures than a woollen equivalent. The cable knit, deep V and navy trim remain exactly as the original required them to be.
