Both hold up well. The last is Saint Crispin's chiseled, a squared and subtly elongated toe with a narrowed waist and a pronounced arch that gives the shoe a sleek, contemporary profile while remaining entirely wearable, sitting in the precise territory between the rounded classicism of an English last and the more aggressive chisel of a fashion shoe. The olive drab suede is grained rather than smooth, the texture adding a quiet utilitarian character to what is already a purposeful design, the colour reading as a muted military tone that pairs across a wider range of trousers than the shade might initially suggest. A city rubber sole provides grip and weather resistance without altering the shoe's low, close-to-the-ground profile. Each pair is accompanied by hollowed shoe trees carved from maple, a wood selected for its density, stability and capacity to take a stain beautifully over time, the trees themselves as considered an object as the shoe they are made to support.

Saint Crispin's has been producing handmade shoes in small volumes since 1985, each pair worked through by a team of artisans trained within the house. The Model 118 on the chiseled last is as close as they get to a minimal shoe, and it turns out that is close enough.
