Curator's DescriptionDiscover the Sartoria Voglio Brown Zignone Vintage Flannel-Wool Sartorial Trousers. The cloth is by Lanificio Zignone, the Biella mill whose origins trace to the early twentieth century and whose founder Gilio Zignone began his production career specifically in flannel, a heritage that the mill has carried through three generations of family ownership to the present day. Based in Strona in the Valle di Mosso, in the pre-Alpine textile heartland of Biella that has been producing some of the world's finest wool cloth for centuries, Zignone controls the full production chain from fibre to finished fabric, the quality of each stage determined entirely within the mill's own walls. Vintage Zignone flannel is the cloth that this heritage produced at its most concentrated, the heavy wool milled to a surface with a depth and body that lighter, modern flannels do not approach, the nap raised to a warmth and softness that suits both the hand and the eye, the cloth falling from its own weight with the kind of drape that only a flannel of genuine substance can achieve. Brown in a heavy flannel carries a richness that the cloth's weight amplifies, the tone warm and full, the surface absorbing light in the manner specific to a properly milled nap.
The trousers are cut with a single pleat at the rise, the pleat opening into the leg and allowing the heavy flannel to move freely through the thigh without pulling, the cloth's natural weight doing the work of draping the leg from that point downward. Brass side adjusters sit at the waistband in place of belt loops, the metal warm against the brown ground, the adjustment allowing the waistband to be set precisely without a belt. The button closure rise is worked by hand, the extended waistband sitting high and finished with the same attention visible throughout the trouser's construction.
Zignone flannel of this weight and vintage is a cloth that does not need to be explained to the man who understands it. The trousers made from it simply need to be worn.
