Curator's DescriptionDiscover the Sartoria Voglio Light Brown Holland and Sherry Cotton Twill Sartorial Trousers. Holland and Sherry is one of the founding names of the British cloth trade, established in London in 1836 and supplying the tailors of Savile Row and the great bespoke houses of Europe for nearly two centuries, the merchant's reputation built on sourcing cloth of a quality that the market's best makers reach for when the standard of the material cannot be a secondary consideration. In cotton twill the house applies the same principle it brings to its wools: the fibre selected for its quality and the weave constructed with the evenness and precision that distinguishes a cloth made to a high standard from one made to a price. The twill construction gives the cotton a diagonal structure that adds strength, a soft drape and a quiet surface relief to the light brown ground, the weave contributing the natural fall and recovery that a plain-woven cotton does not carry, the trouser moving with the body rather than holding its own shape against it. Light brown in Holland and Sherry cotton twill is a tone with warmth and ease, the colour sitting comfortably across seasons and contexts, the cotton's soft touch giving the ground a naturalness that suits the trouser's sartorial construction without formality.
The trousers are cut with a single pleat at the rise, the pleat releasing the cloth generously through the thigh. Bartacks are hand-set at each stress point, the fine thread drawn and finished by hand in the manner that separates a trouser constructed with genuine attention from one that merely resembles it, the detail visible on close inspection as the slight irregularity specific to work done by hand rather than machine. The extended waistband is finished throughout with the same care, the button closure rise completing the construction in keeping with everything else Sartoria Voglio brings to a trouser built from cloth of this provenance.
Holland and Sherry cotton twill in light brown with hand-set bartacks is a trouser that carries its quality in the details most people will never look for. The man who made it knew they were there.
